NEXUS S LAUNCH

March 21st, 2011, posted in Phone review, Random rants, Review, Shennanigans

Fiona called me up the other day to attend the Nexus S launch by Maxis. As an Android phone,

of course I’ll say yes to that.  Held at Pavilion KL, I was eager to see the new developers phone by Google.

IMG_9848

As usual, they were promoting other Samsung made phones such as the Tab,Galaxy S, Galaxy 3 and etc.

Owning Galaxy S for a while and having the worst experience ever with a phone, I was a little skeptical on the Nexus S.

Well, you know, Galaxy S owner, how we suffer from lag and etc. Its only fix-able via custom firmware and

etc.

IMG_9851

True enough, the Nexus S was a performance beast but yet again ( as usual ) marred by poor body material selection

: CHEAP FLIMSY PLASTIC. I don’t know whats with Korean, but every product they have feels cheap as the favour

plastic over something solid. IMG_9859

Well outlook wise, it doesn’t impressed me at all. The feel is just not there. Galaxy S seems to be better at that.

Not to mentioned, the buttons are the typical 4 button standard android have. I prefer the Galaxy S –

Iphone look alike home button. More elegant.

The responsiveness from this phone is quite good. I bet Samsung ditch their crappy RFS system altogether.

The only thing stays sucky is the linkpack scores. Its not a good benchmark test, but still it does tell a bit about the phone.

 IMG_9869

13.596 mflop? My Motorola Milestone marks 13.5 at 600mhz and 17.5 at 1.2ghz. This seriously phail. To be honest,

Nexus One is even better. At least Google did bother to optimize Froyo for SnapDragon processor to boost the MFlops.

Anyway in terms of entertainment, the phone has an inbuilt flash supports and a rather good graphic card. Enough power

to play online craps while multitasking such as listening to music. The graphic card and in built flash support makes the phone

really responsive while playing such heavy tasker game. My Galaxy S definitely fail on that part.

Anyway, I wasn’t given much time to test this phone out. Anyone willing to loan it to me?? Haha. I wanna try this beast out and compare

it with Samsung’s other crap : Galaxy S. lol

Samsung Galaxy Tab Quick Review : First Glance

January 3rd, 2011, posted in Advertorials, Phone review, Shennanigans

Ever since Apple came out with a winner, everyone else tries to kill it out of jealousy. Samsung is no different. What can you expect, the IPAD has been taking all the market share for tablet device ever since it was launch. Samsung’s answer to this is the Galaxy Tab. At first glance it looks like an older brother to the Galaxy S except that the screen is 7’ inch compare to Galaxy S 4’ inch.

Packed with the standard features such as a 1Ghz HummingBird processor, WIFI, 3G, HSDPA, 5MP Camera + Front Facing 1.3MP, this tablet puts any other Android based tablet to shame. Not only it has 3G internet connectivity, it is a phone itself. Using loudspeaker as the earpiece, it is not the best of a phone, but hey its a backup if your phone decided to died on you!

Design

IMG_8740

Speaking of design, the phone has a pretty standard design, with front glossy screen and 4 standard Android buttons. Volume rocker is at the side, while the power button is on top as of Ipad. Speakers are located below, in between the charging port while headphone jack is located on top.

The back of the Tab is white in color and is something distinguishable from other tablet pc. It beats Ipad color, even my gf is in love with it. I also love how it fits perfectly in my palm instead of having to use two hands to hold it like on the Ipad. The size itself is a winner.

IMG_8724

Size comparison of the Galaxy Tab with HD7, Galaxy S and Ipod Touch. While it is larger than most phones, it certainly packs the feature you need for a tablet PC while not being oversize and heavy as some other fruit products.

Hardware and Software

The first thing you’ll notice is that the Tab doesn’t have a removable battery like a normal phones. The built in battery is very capable of lasting you at least 3 days with heavy data usage. So where’s the sim card and memory card slot you ask?

IMG_8748

There! It side loads it making it very convenient for users to hot swap their sim and memory card.

Galaxy Tab screen has a missing feature, a super Amoled. The 7 inch killer screen only incorporates an LCD screen that i assume that it is made due to cost of production. That said, the screen is still as responsive, vibrant and stunning as on Galaxy S. The capacitive screen responds to my touch in a very prompt manner.

IMG_8757

Running on Android 2.2 froyo, Sammie did not use their own TouchWiz launcher for their home screen, instead opted for the Stock interface. But the app drawer unfortunately is still using the their infamous TouchWIz interface as seen on the Galaxy S.

Performance seems to be snappy and it doesnt have the infamous lag experienced on the Galaxy S. Although it is using the infamous RFS filesystem which is known to slow down the Galaxy S, this device is a killer.

IMG_8759

One more thing i should point out is that this device is truly a 512mb RAM device. Unlike false advertising on the Galaxy S, which claims to have 512MB ram but only 300+ in real life usage, Sammie nailed it for this one.

As usual, this being a tablet device and a rival to Ipad, you might ask what software does it have to satisfy your reading pleasure.

IMG_8751
Yup, this software dubbed the Aldiko ebook reader has 3 section : News, Books and Magazines. Some of the items need subscription while some are FOC.

I love the newspaper section because it has all our local daily!

IMG_8753

The STAR newspaper. (:

Well, i wasnt given much time to really review and test the whole unit’s function but as far as ebook features and basic funtionality, the device is the bomb. The speaker is especially loud, WIFI signal is expectionally strong, HSDPA connection seem to be going strong and of course the screen is just the killer. Its the “just nice” phone and ebook reader unlike the IPad thats overly huge, and Galaxy S that’s a tad too small.

As an Android supporter, i maybe bias in my review, but heck this is one exception because this device is really snappy and a bang for buck. The only thing that irates me is that the backlight of the touch sensitive button that occasionally decides not to light up for God Knows What Reason..

Other than that……. Its just a beast.

Samsung Galaxy S : Why you should buy or should not?

October 2nd, 2010, posted in Computer, Random rants, Shennanigans

Smartphones these days are getting stronger and more advance than ever before. The Android section particularly is taking the world by storm having a large amount of share over the market just slightly below of Iphone.

Samsung recently jump the bandwagon to release an Android powerhouse, their flagship model, Samsung Galaxy S. Spotting their flagship SUPER Amoled screen and a 1 Ghz Hummingbird processor equip with PowerVR SGX540 GPU, its no wonder Galaxy S retains its tittle as the most powerful phone in the market. But is it enough to knock out Iphone 4G? Read on.

(This review will be comparing to the Iphone 4. As such I will state that when I am comparing both of these phones)

IMG_7305

(The UI above is not the original phone’s UI but after extensive modification. Now you know the power of Android, but ill leave that for another post to cover them)

The phone weighs at about 119g making it one of the lightest smartphone available. No doubt, it feels plasticky, considering the cheaper-yet-better-hardware price. The whole phone is made out of plastic except for the frame as you can see in the picture above. Despite the plastic feel, the phone feels solid, measuring at 122.4 x 64.2 x 9.9mm just 0.6mm thicker of IPhone 4 at 9.3mm.

If theres one phone that Samsung is certainly mimicking, it’s the Iphone. The design itself is so similar to the Iphone especially the ‘trademark’ middle button that Iphone posses. Volume rockers are located at the upper left of the phone and there’s touch sensitive control for the menu on the left and back button on the right. Samsung however decided to leave the 4th Android button off this phone which is the search button and instead making the long press of the menu button to replace it. The power button is however awkwardly place on the right side making it un comfortable to press.

IMG_7307

This sleek device comes with a 4inch  SUPER AMOLED Display with a resolution of 800 x 600, it certainly own the title of the best screen out there if not including the Iphone’s 326DPI Retina Display. Of course this display could not match up to the Iphone’s but for real life usage, the AMOLED wins it all due to the fact that the eyes could not view past 300DPI and the fact that SUPER AMOLED uses as much as 33% lesser power than the Retina, juicing out the Iphone already sucky battery life.  The Galaxy S also spots a multi touch capacitive touchscreen that respond well enough to touch and requires minimal touch to have it to work. SUPER AMOLED = WIN.

The original UI of the phone.

Apart from that, Samsung has also threw in 5mp camera that has a whole loads of settings, camera mode and of course wide range of scene that suits your photography taste as opposed to the Iphone. The only thing missing from this camera is LED Flash while the Iphone 4 has. One particular mode I love the most is the sweep panorama which allows panorama picture to be done by the camera itself.

Video recording seem decent although both Iphone 4 and Galaxy S records at 720p. Video might seemed pleasurable to view, audio on the other hand seems a little blow off because of the lack of stereo microphone.

WIFI on the other hand spots Mobile AP which translates into WIFI Tethering. This means you could use your phone as a hotspot, and having a few WIFI capable devices to connect to your phone and using its HSDPA connection for internet access. This is a plus point especially to those who would want to work on their laptop and needing a internet connection urgently.

This section of the article will talk about the problems of the phone and WHY you SHOULD or SHOULD NOT buy this phone

Many users who own this phone complains on the lag they experience and while its true this phone does lag a lot, it can be fix. This is the power of Android and open source, any bug or whatsoever can be fix by YOURSELF. The only problem we have is, do you have the knowledge to do it? I would recommended an Android phone any day over the Iphone but seeing this lag problem I am sure EVERY single one of you guys will just go “Oh Android sucks”

Well, there, that’s your mistake. The problem is not with Android but with Samsung itself. Samsung screwed up the whole phone with their unknowledgeable programmer and their ego on retaining their home build filesystem, RFS. The RFS filesystem caused a bottleneck on the I/O performance and causing lags for read and write on the disk.

The lag seemed unjustifiable over the powerful 1Ghz processor but that problem is not that big considering the open source community came out with various fix to address this issue. My phone if flying after the fix. Ask a few bloggers out there, the phone is as smooth as an Iphone 4.

Ok here’s the GOLDEN QUESTION

Should you buy this phone?

YES. If you trust the open source community. This phone is powerful, unfortunately Samsung screwed it up but the community is working very hard to bring out the full power of this phone. Once most of the issue is fix, this phone will be really really fast. Notably for games, this phone can pump out 90 trillion polygons per second and in layman terms it translates to SMOOTH GAMING, even beating the Iphone 4!

NO. If you think computers are just so not my type. You just want a working phone out of the box. Well, the phone is working, but the lag needs to be fix. Its actually quite easy and need no programming skills. But then again, its up to your personal preference.

IMG_7302

RyanZA from XDA-Developers.com recently released a downloadable app from the market to fix this issue. Its as easy as clicking a few button and its fix. If you were asking on my opinion whether or not to get this phone, my answer would be YES! Android is a powerful platform that is targeted to CUSTOMIZATION. You could do anything with it whether on features or UI. It certainly beats the IPhone 4 in every aspect except for the ‘lifestyle’ that Apple has to offer.

Don’t blame Android or the phone for its slow performance. Blame Samsung. To other galaxy S owner out there, after clearing your mind and you think that you would wanna fix this issue and stop complaining and whinning your ass off, contact me. Email me. This issue can be fix with only a few clicks. (I wont be held responsible if anything happens).
