EVENT: ZEN Star Chef – Media & Blogger Food Review Session
VENUE: ZEN Secret Recipe @ Sooka Sentral
DATE: 4th July 2009 (Saturday)
TIME: 2 pm – 5 pm
Last Saturday, Bryan Lim invited Zoe, Dusty and me to a food tasting session by six chef wannabe for the Zen’s Star Chef competition. (Thanks to BestFoodJunction too for the invites)
Zen Star Chef is a talent show where 6 people compete to win the grand prize of a once in a life time trip to experience culinary art in Australia.
These are the contestants that are competing for the grand prize.
From left Alson Khor, Peter Pang, Jeff Wang, Trevor Pang, Christopher Wan Sageng, Emil Farez
This is my first time attending such event and i love it. After all food is heaven, aite? xD
Here are the creations of these aspiring young chef that made my lunch a tremendous experience that ill remember for life. LOL. The theme was Oriental ( i think) and healthy.
Main Course.
Roasted Moroccan Chicken with Harrissa & Sambal, Curried Couscous and Mixed Green Salad
The chicken is a bit overcooked. I think its because the in house chef did not roast it to perfection. After all its not these chef who did the cooking so cant blame. =)
by Trevor Pang.
Fish Tempura & Beans serve with Pumpkin Curry Dip
Okay. This dish seems fine to me expect that it doesn’t suit the curry dip. =) Its fish tempura lah! Put tomato dip or something. Just my 2 cents.
by Emil Farez
Pan Fried Salmon serve with Mango Hollandaise Sauce
The Salmon was kinda dry in the inside. It wasn’t so juicy as i thought i would be. (Looks may be deceiving eh? xD ) But what i love is he added a sour twist (thanks to the mango Hollaidaise sause) and a lip smacking mashed yam in it. I love the mashed yam. Kudos!
by Christopher Wan Sageng.
Pan Fried Salmon serve with garlic beurre blanc.
Woots. This is my personal favorite. The salmon is juciy enought to my liking, the ginger + garlic combination and the tomato hint in the dish just makes it heaven. A must try!
by Alson Khor.
Hot Pot Braised Chicken
Honestly i am confused with all the dishes served because its like a buffet style when it was served. But i think the tomato is wonderful. I am not sure about the chicken though. And the toasted garlic bread just goes well with the tomato. =)
by Peter Pang. ( Are you brothers with Trevor? LOl )
Baked Cheese Thai Curry Chicken Fried Rice
The fried rice is ordinary. IMHO, i think that fried rice should not be made into a creation or whatsoever. Because its ordinary. The only thing awesome about the dish is the curry chicken. Green Curry and its DAMN AWESOME! I am a curry fan and this curry rocks. Make more curry and I’ll come back for you. xD
by Jeff Wang.
Desserts. The desserts were modified by Secret Recipe to make it marketable. WTF. Come on, preserve their creation man. Its so hard to recognize their awesome scrumptious desserts when you modify it okay!.
Pineapple and clove mousse.
Its delicious cuz every bite has pineapple in it.
by Christopher Wan Sageng
Trio Mousse
Its kinda bittersweet but i love it. Just not good enough to be my favorite. =)
by Peter Pang.
Chilled Strawberry Cheesecake.
Do you know what SR did with it? They modify it to become a normal pink strawberry cake. =( Now this is my personal fav. Blame me, i have fetish for cheesecakes. We all love cheesecakes dont we? And this is just awesome. The cheese is not so ‘cheesy’ till it makes you go.. errm whats the word.. Jelak.. or something.
by Emil Farez
Kalamansi Cheesecake
This cake is awesome. I love cheesecake and this certainly life up to its name. Recommended.
by Trevor Pang.
Black Sesame Oreo Cheesecake
This cake is just like the oreo cheesecake SR has. But the bottom part is does not fit the top part of the cake. Its not … nice?
by Trevor Pang
Overall, to me, dish/dessert that made an impact in terms of taste i.e: the taste made a lasting impression, will get my vote.
And honestly, the Pan Fried Salmon serve with garlic beurre blanc certainly wow-ed me. I am just amazed at how the fried ginger taste so good. I am not a fan of ginger, but it really goes well with the salmon. The tomato hint that he added made the dish out of this world. Kudos Trevor.
Anyway, every dish is nice. They all have their own specialty. I am not a food critic anyway. So yeah. =) And i enjoyed the experience of sampling food. Really appreciate it Bryan. =) I cant wait for the finals of this competition in August. Good Luck to you guys. Nice knowing you all. And psssttt.. Trevor was marketing himself to us. xD =)
p.s: Someone from BestFoodJunction actually recognizes me. WOOTS.
